From the Bollywood movie that became a North American blockbuster! Did you know: A. R. Rahman planned the score in two months and completed it in 20 days? It worked out well because the soundtrack won a Golden Globe, two Oscars, and two Grammys.
Stephen Roberts (b. 1952)
Bhangra Dance
This piece was written by the British composer Stephen Roberts to celebrate England’s thriving Indian population. It comes from a suite of four dances called World Dances.

Janjhan from Lahoriye
This Bhangra music from modern Indian films will have you dancing! The composer of this piece, Jatinder Shah, is a renowned music producer, and has composed music for more than 50 Punjabi movies.
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908)
Sadko: Song of India
This piece comes from Rimsky-Korsakov’s 1898 opera Sadko, and was adapted from the aria Song of the Indian Guest. The melody was used in a song that eventually became Ohio’s state song, and in 2013, renowned soprano Sarah Brightman released a recording of it on her album Dreamcatcher.

Al Bandar
Asif Illyas is a composer from right here in Halifax! Not only is he an ECMA-winning artist, but he has also arranged a number of songs for Symphony Nova Scotia’s Fusion series.
Ravi Shankar (1920-2012),

Universal Magic
The composer of this piece was known for fusing the music of East and West, resulting in wonderful, incredible, and magical music. He has also won five Grammys and was nominated for two Oscars.
Malkit Singh (b. 1963),

Mama Bada Great
This is the sort of joyous music you might hear at an Indian wedding! The singer, Malkit Singh, has sold more than 4.9 million albums over the course of his 40-year career, making him one of the biggest-selling bhangra solo artists of all time.
