A simple suitcase. What do you think about when you see one? My guess is a vacation, and I would be in total agreement----if it weren’t for the idea that suitcases are also referred to as baggage, especially when you are in an airport. Then I start thinking: BAGGAGE? Why are we carrying around so much baggage? It weighs us down, it holds us back, it makes us unhappy. In today’s stop/time dance theater show, UNPACKING, we dig deep into the things that keep us from being our true selves and discover that sometimes the answers are right there in front of us. We just need to be open to exploring our options.
This year’s show, our NINETEENTH, was a beautiful collaboration with my dear friends and fellow stop/time members, Rick Fountain, Tori Mooney, and Amanda Forker. The 4 of us really enjoy getting together and brainstorming ideas (especially when there is food involved) knowing that we can suggest anything at all and the best idea in the room will win! I am grateful for all the help each member of the cast and production team provided.
Devoted followers of stop/time may notice that our cast is smaller than usual this year. Over the years the dancers have created beautiful families of their own and it has become difficult for some of them to commit the time needed to participate in the show and be available for their kids’ dance competitions, skiing lessons, basketball games, lacrosse, baseball and so on and so on. As the stop/time “Mom” it is so hard for me when I have to say goodbye. Luckily, they still come back and help in any way they can. And speaking of families, 2 of our dancers are pregnant (not in the show) and due any minute!!!! It is fun watching our stop/time family grow.
The cast and I thank you for your support, especially those of you who return year after year.
We love performing for you, appreciate your enthusiasm, and never take for granted that you make the time to see us! I hope you will think of us every time you see a “Baggage Claim” sign and remember that the journeys we take are far more important than the destinations.
We’re better when we’re dancing!
Darlene
