When this show became available, Darlene, Tracy and I felt we had to produce it. The large ensemble in combination with brilliant music and choreography is right in line with the expectations of our annual summer musical. However, with this show, there is a deep, underlying through line of the need to belong, the need to grieve, and the need to heal and become whole again that really cut to our cores. VJ Day was August 15th, 1945. BANDSTAND begins later that month, with the soldiers returning from war, having lost so much. On the home front, the nation, which had lost so much as well, is trying to recover a sense of normalcy. I feel that, even though this show takes place 80 years ago, this is a world that does not feel like a distant memory.
Many of the veterans portrayed in this production suffer from PTSD. Often the stigma attached to PTSD is that it is a sign of weakness and it is riddled with shame. I hope this production can open up conversations in the hopes of de-stigmatizing what these veterans and their families have gone through.
Thank you for attending this production. Just this past week, four theaters in the country closed their doors. These are theaters that made it through COVID, but could not survive the slow recovery. We are only the third regional production of this show, so your support is greatly appreciated. Please spread the word to help Playhouse on Park continue to survive and thrive.

VENTILATION UPGRADES
Playhouse on Park has undertaken an effort to improve the quality of the indoor air inside the main theatre, rehearsal spaces, and all other associated facilities. The work has followed the Ventilation Verification requirements put forth by the Actors’ Equity Association as an effort to help ensure safety of member actors in response to the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic. The project has followed guidance from the CDC, NIH, OSHA, and other relevant authorities. Following a shared air quality (SAQ) assessment, which included a complete evaluation of the current HVAC infrastructure and the usage and flow of all spaces, areas were identified to make improvements to the quality of inhaled, or rebreathed, air. These included improvements to filtration, increased ventilation, and installation of air purification technology to deactivate and remove potentially harmful particles. These steps were followed by a reassessment of each space to help quantify and ensure the health and safety improvements that were made. The air quality work aligned with the standards developed by ASHRAE along with the EPA and NEMI, and were performed by a technician fully licenced in the State of Connecticut.
