First Generation Asian American Renegades. In love. And on the run.

Direct from his Broadway debut in Almost Famous The Musical, Artistic Associate Matthew C. Yee’s world premiere musical romp gives a nod to America’s past, takes tally of its present, and blows its future wide open.

Featuring original country western and folk songs, directed by Amanda Dehnert (Peter Pan (A Play), Eastland), Lucy and Charlie’s Honeymoon tracks a young couple as they rev it down quintessentially American highways and across stereotypic borders, fleeing expectation and trawling up trouble along the way.

THAT "Kinda Asian": Constructing Identity Beyond Categories

Dr. Ada Cheng joins us in a discussion centering the multiplicity of Asian identity and culture

July 6, 2023 following the 1:30PM matinee (approximately 3:30PM)

ABOUT DR. ADA CHENG

From Renegade Professor to Middle-Aged Performer

Taiwan-born Ada Cheng had achieved the American dream:U.S. citizenship, a tenured faculty position as a sociology professor, and a following of students who adored her.

But by midlife, she was tired of struggling against both subtle and overt gender and racial discrimination and battling conservative academia. Driven by instinct and whim, Ada enrolled in an improvisation class at Chicago’s acclaimed Second City, and found a new second act for herself as a storyteller, stand-up comedian, and improv comic. An educator, artist, creator, speaker, and facilitator, Dr. Ada Cheng has utilized storytelling to illustrate structural inequities, raise critical awareness, and build intimate communities. Committed to amplifying and uplifting marginalized voices, she has created numerous storytelling platforms for BIPOC and LGBTQIA community members to tell difficult and vulnerable stories. She has consistently engaged in public education and public outreach through the use of storytelling and performance arts.

Reflect Series are free to attend and open to the public. If you would like to attend but are not seeing the show, arrive to the lobby 15 minutes prior to the start time.
