Our recital explores love in its real and raw forms. We set the stage with mournful recognition of human sin and joyful response to Jesus’ redemption. Bach’s Cantata, Mein Herze schwimmt im Blut, expresses this through poignant, vulnerable text, while Alex Corley’s songs interpret St. Ephraim’s (a fourth-century Syrian Christian) convictions about God’s plan of love.
Love between people is the theme that characterizes the next part of our program. Two songs by Undine Smith Moore juxtapose the visceral feeling of strong love with its inevitable frailty. A zany set of duets from the contemporary musical theater repertoire offers a brief story arc of a young couple through unity, miscommunication, and separation. “Stars and the Moon” offers a woman’s re-telling of various men whose love she dismissed because they weren’t…rich. This set concludes with “Christmas Lullaby:” a young girl’s brave choice to keep her unplanned, unborn child; love for the baby and love for the world surround this decision.
Finally, I conclude with a few songs that are personally meaningful to me.
Thank you for attending today! It has been an honor to share this time with you.
