Another Marriage
A world premiere about rewriting one's own story
Welcome to Another Marriage

On Ensemble.

As Steppenwolf’s artistic leaders, we constantly ask the question: “What does it mean to be an ensemble?” Our ensemble here at Steppenwolf is an incredible cross-section of experience, perspectives and skills. It’s our responsibility to ask: “What unites us? What makes this ensemble singular? And what do we, as ensemble members, owe to ourselves and each other?”

Depending on the week, we might answer these questions in any number of ways. But since starting rehearsals for ensemble member Kate Arrington’s playwriting debut Another Marriage, we have been thinking a lot about bravery, trust and exploration.

At its best, Steppenwolf is a place for fearless exploration. A place for our ensemble members to step out of their comfort zones and try something new. To bravely confront big questions with compassion, tenacity and curiosity. And, ultimately, to expose the deepest versions of ourselves to those we trust the most: our collaborators. Our ensemble.

Enter Kate Arrington, who has made the bold leap into writing with this honest, funny and wrenching play. Another Marriage is both an observational study of modern relationships, and a tribute to the power and pain passed from mother to daughter through generations. We celebrate Kate’s debut as a writer and are excited to launch this phase in her career, here at her creative home. What else is a creative home for, if not taking risks and getting out of your lane?

To see the support that has lined up behind Kate’s enterprise is an inspiring reminder of the care and compassion of this creative family. Multiple generations of Steppenwolf ensemble members are represented here. Caroline Neff and Ian Barford ease into their roles as if they were tailor-made. To have our co-founder Terry Kinney directing again at Steppenwolf reconnects today’s Steppenwolf theater with our roots, helping us to grow even stronger into the future. And it is not lost on us that Another Marriage was made possible by two fearless women – the great Martha Lavey inspired Kate to begin writing, and our predecessor Anna D. Shapiro took a generous leap of faith in programming it. For them we are extremely grateful.

Throw in the iconic Judy Greer and the delightful Nicole Scimeca into the mix, and you have the ingredients for the type of magic that is only possible at Steppenwolf.

Enjoy Another Marriage.
