Program Notes

Richard Brinsley Butler Sheridan (30 October 1751 – 7 July 1816) had many titles throughout his heavily publicized and scrutinized life. A playwright, politician, poet and owner of the London Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, he has been described as a genius wit and wordsmith. The influence of his writing is evident through the consistent praise and performances of his most famous works The Rivals (1775) and The School for Scandal (1777). A man of humble origins in Ireland, Sheridan and his family permanently moved to London, eventually giving him access to the high society he lampooned so regularly.

The School for Scandal has maintained a steady popularity, particularly in England, with numerous high profile actors taking the reins, including John Palmer, Jane Pope, John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh. Jane Austen is even recorded as having played Mrs. Candour in a private performance in 1812. Though Sheridan himself was a controversial figure--for instance, avidly supporting a number of emancipation causes, but also behaving recklessly and dangerously in his personal life--he has amassed few detractors to his literary and theatrical works.

The messages present in his works remain as relevant today as they were in his time: Honesty in the long-term trumps the perceived benefits of a curated and surface-oriented lifestyle. Wit is a virtuous quality that should not always be associated with ill-intent, and a redemption of reputation, though difficult, is possible. We see these parallels today, in our culture’s obsession with social media. What is on display is often not what it seems to be. The rise and fall of individual’s social stock is fodder and entertainment for public scrutiny. Indeed, something in our human nature seems stubbornly drawn to the joys, affectations, and frailties on display in The School for Scandal.
