Carole King is undisputedly one of the most important pop music writers of all time. Even before her 4 time Grammy Award winning album Tapestry, she was already one of the most prolific writers during the Brill Building period. She wrote her first #1 hit, “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow,” at the age of 17. She has written over 100 Billboard Top 100 Hits and Tapestry stayed on the Billboard 200 list for over 6 years. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice—the first person to be inducted separately as a songwriter as well as a performing artist - and was the first female to win the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize. More than 400 of her compositions have been recorded by over 1,000 artists.
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical chronicles Carole King’s life from her early days as a songwriter and her personal and professional relationship with her first husband and writing partner Gerry Goffin, through her recording of Tapestry and her infamous 1971 concert at Carnegie Hall. The show is a memory play as she looks back on all of the moments in her life, tapestries coming together piece by piece leading to the creation of her music. It illustrates not only how the music shapes her life, but also how her life shapes the music. The show demonstrates the seismic shift that happened as the music industry transitioned from music factories of the late 1950’s and 60’s like the Brill Building and Aldon Music at 1650 Broadway to the singer/songwriters of the late 1960’s and 70’s. As a pioneer in both arenas, Carole King’s musical progression encapsulates this metamorphosis.
Carole King’s music is an indelible part of our collective consciousness. It embodies the beauty and universality of the human experience. Her songs are filled with forgiveness, optimism, and perseverance. Working on a show where the characters are based on real people, it was important as a company that we honored their story, legacy, and impact. On a personal note, as someone who grew up with a love of Carole King’s music passed down from my parents, it was exciting to be able to introduce my own children to these powerful songs and watch someone experience this music for the first time. It only further proved the timelessness of the music and its ability to cross generationally bring people together.
