Dr. Christopher Buchanan joined the Annapolis Symphony as second trumpet in 2013. He enjoys a dynamic career as a performer, arranger and composer and has been praised as possessing “technical wizardry and compelling melodic storytelling” as well as “breath-taking virtuosity (ITG Journal, May 2012).” He currently serves as Staff Arranger for the United States Navy Band, where he was previously a member of the trumpet section. He has also performed with the U. S. Naval Academy Band, Richmond Symphony, Charlottesville Symphony, Williamsburg Symphony, and Maryland Lyric Opera.
He received a Doctor of Musical Arts degree (trumpet) from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University in 2016. Additionally, he holds a Master of Music (musicology) from Peabody as well as a Master of Music (trumpet) and Bachelor of Music (summa cum laude, trumpet and composition) degrees from the University of Illinois. His principal teachers were Ronald Romm (Canadian Brass), Joe Burgstaller (Canadian Brass), Edward Hoffman (Baltimore Symphony Orchestra) the late Dr. Michael Ewald.
Dr. Buchanan held the post of lecturer of trumpet at the University of Virginia from 2014 to 2016. An active soloist, chamber musician and educator, he has performed and given masterclasses throughout the nation, including the International Trumpet Guild Convention, John F. Kennedy Center for the Arts, the National Music Festival and numerous colleges and universities. A distinguished composer and arranger, Dr. Buchanan’s music can be frequently heard at the White House and has been performed by military bands and university wind ensembles across the country.
