Edwaard Liang is the Artistic Director of The Washington Ballet and former Artistic Director at BalletMet. Born in Taipei and raised in California, he began his training at Marin Ballet and later studied at the School of American Ballet. He joined New York City Ballet in 1993, was promoted to Soloist, and appeared in Broadway’s Fosse and with Nederlands Dans Theater 1. A celebrated choreographer, Liang has created works for leading companies worldwide, including the Mariinsky, Bolshoi, NYCB, and San Francisco Ballet. He led BalletMet from 2012 to 2023 and has received numerous honors, including the Prince Prize, Choo San Goh Award, and an Emmy® for his dance film Vaulted. His choreography was featured at the World Economic Forum in Davos, and he continues to shape the future of ballet through innovation and leadership.
