Rahul Sharma has carved a niche for himself in the world of Indian classical and world fusion music. He has released over 60 albums, with a roughly even split between classical and experimental recordings. One of his milestone albums is Music of the Himalayas, which he recorded for the Peter Gabriel label, Real World Records.
Rahul Sharma has taken the 100-stringed santoor into several distinctly modern settings, collaborating with Grammy winners such as American smooth jazz saxophonist Kenny G, Eric Mouquet of Deep Forrest, and French pianist Richard Clayderman. Rahul 's latest collaboration in 2020 was The Symphony of Santoor with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Recently, he has composed music for the web series Ramyug, featuring the singing of superstar Amitabh Bachchan.
Rahul Sharma learned to play the santoor from his father, the illustrious santoor master, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, who was instrumental in bringing this little-known instrument out from the valleys of Kashmir and introducing it to the Indian classical music world. And like the great Pandit, Rahul Sharma has become renowned for breathtaking duets with tabla master Ustad Zakir Hussain. He has imbibed his father’s style and has since built on it, taking the santoor to new corners of the world, performing at the WOMAD international arts festival, the Edinburgh International Festival, The Esplanade in Singapore, and the Royal Festival Hall in London.
