The Brooklyn-born and raised actress, Capathia Jenkins, most recently starred as ‘Medda’ in the hit Disney production of Newsies on Broadway. She has also been seen on Broadway in The Civil War, where she created the role of Harriet Jackson, The Look of Love, Caroline, Or Change, and Martin Short – Fame Becomes Me, where she sang ‘Stop the Show’ and brought the house down every night. Ms. Jenkins starred Off-Broadway in the revival of Godspell and (mis) Understanding Mammy for which she received a Drama Desk Nomination. Ms. Jenkins will be seen on the live NBC production of The Wiz.
An active concert artist, Ms. Jenkins has appeared with orchestras around the world including the Cleveland Orchestra, Houston Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony (with Marvin Hamlisch), Philly Pops, Cincinnati Pops, National Symphony, Atlanta Symphony, Seattle Symphony, Utah Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Colorado Symphony, Toronto Symphony, San Diego Symphony and the Hong Kong Philharmonic and has been a guest soloist numerous times with the Festival Cesky Krumlov in the Czech Republic. Capathia had the great honor of performing in the ‘Broadway Ambassadors to Cuba’ concert as part of the Festival De Teatro De La Habana. She returned to Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops in December, 2019 for their Holiday shows and sang in a Tribute to Marvin Hamlisch at the Library of Congress. Her latest concert, Aretha: A Tribute, is being performed with over 30 symphonies throughout the US.
Ms. Jenkins recently released her new solo album entitled Phenomenal Woman: The Songs of Maya Angelou. Her television credits include 30 Rock, the Practice, Law & Order SVU, the Sopranos, Law & Order. She can be seen in the 2012 film ‘Musical Chairs’ directed by Susan Seidelman.
