Stage 1
This piece is about Stage 1 cancer. Recently, two women near and dear to my heart have both been diagnosed with stage 1 cancer – one with breast cancer, one with endometrial cancer. Both have had successful operations to remove the cancerous area.
While healing has begun, the emotional impact and fear of recurrence still lingers. Surviving this scare has also given both women a renewed sense of freedom and empowerment, as in “If I can beat cancer, I can handle this or I can do that.”
The resiliency of these women has given me hope and strength in my own life.
Rosetta Studies
Rosetta Studies is a wall of organized patterned pieces.
The imagery is derived from an abstracted photograph of my hands in a particular form. The gesture itself resembles connection.
The photographic image was then transformed into two patterns or shapes: one with the fingertips pointed inwards, called “Love” references home, closeness, and family. The second shape with the fingertips pointing outward “Connection” reflects community, sharing, giving, and cooperation.
At a glance from afar, the wall is simply a beautiful pattern in pleasing colors. As one moves closer, the individual shapes become more apparent. With observation, the imagery of the hand shape can be deciphered, thus adding meaning and depth to the artwork.
