Gavin Hansen is a senior at Pewaukee High school and has been playing bassoon for seven years. He has studied with Rudi Heinrich, assistant principal of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra for the past five years and previously with Lisa Weiss Cornelius.
He joined MYSO in 2020 and has performed in the Wind Ensemble, Philharmonia, Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, chamber ensembles, and for the past four years, the Senior Symphony. He was invited as one of the youngest musicians to join in the MYSO’s tour to Belgium and the Netherlands in the summer of 2023 and was fortunate to travel for MYSO’s tour to Poland and the Czech Republic in the summer of 2025.
His love for music has taken him to many double reed days where he had master classes with bassoon professionals and professors. He has earned first ratings on Class A solos at WSMA solo ensemble contests including state competitions in which he was nominated twice for--and won--the exemplary performance award as a high school freshman. Other recognition includes: honorable mention in the 2024 Audrey G. Baird Stars of Tomorrow competition presented by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, honorable mention in the Wisconsin Philharmonic Shining Stars competition in 2024, and honorable mention for MYSO’s Senior Symphony concerto competition this year.
Gavin has enjoyed performing in miscellaneous musical groups and has also enjoyed learning piano. He has performed in a recorder ensemble at his high school for the past 4 years. On both piano and recorders pieces, he has earned advancement in state competitions and top ratings.
Gavin plans to continue his love of music by attending university where he plans to major in bassoon performance and chemistry.
