Ko'jua Dance Medley
Traditional, arr. Rebecca Pellett

This arrangement came about through a collaboration between conductor Lucas Waldin and arranger Rebecca Pellett, led by advice and guidance from revered Mi'kmaw elders and musicians such as Alan Syliboy, as an opener for Symphony Nova Scotia's concert with Jeremy Dutcher in 2019. It draws from archival recordings and videos made by Lee Cremo, a late Mi'kmaw fiddler/singer, fusing them with musical textures reminiscent of classic North American settler folk and theatre music. The piece draws heavily on the influences of American composer Aaron Copland and classic Hollywood scores, while retaining many of the traditional structures, rhythms, and melodies of this iconic dance, which is unique to Miꞌkmaꞌki.
