Son of a playing card manufacturer, Albinoni eventually abandoned the idea of following his father’s profession and gave himself over to his true calling, music. His operas – more than 80 in all, though few full scores have survived – brought his first international fame, but it was his large output of instrumental music that secured his reputation. He reached his pinnacle of success during the 1720s, when he composed works on commission for influential noble patrons in several countries. His set of 12 Concerti à cinque (Concertos in Five Parts), Op. 9, was published in 1722. Dedicated to Maximilian II, Elector of Bavaria, it consists of four concertos for one oboe, four for two oboes, and four for strings alone.
