JUNO-nominated Cris Derksen is a composer and cellist who blends traditional and contemporary music to weave together her classical training with her Indigenous ancestry. Round Dance is a seven-minute piece composed in 2015 as part of a larger, 45-minute performance for full orchestra called Orchestral Powwow. Says Cris of the piece: “It’s a really beautiful cinematic piece, and it’s definitely one of my favourite pieces that I’ve created for large ensembles or ever, really. It’s really cinematic and emotive” (Stir).
