Johanne Nguyen, an up-and-coming 25-year-old pianist and composer, has carved a place for herself in the musical community by her versatility.
Having started the piano at 5 years old and the violin at 8, she pursued her music education at the collegiate level at École de Musique Vincent-d’Indy (EMVI) where she graduated, with honours, with a double DEC in Health Science and Piano Performance in 2016, under the tutelage of Prof. Marianne Fontaine. While at EMVI, she was a laureate and recipient of numerous prizes and excellence scholarships, including the Prix d’Expression Musical and the Prix Monique Labadie for the highest marks in piano performance for two consecutive years. She was also appointed composer in residence with the OSCM for the 2015/16 season, and was invited to perform at a pre-concert of Orchestre Métropolitain in the foyer of the Maison Symphonique in 2015.
Following her graduation from EMVI in 2016, Johanne took a six-year break from music and moved to Halifax. She subsequently enrolled at Dalhousie University, graduating in 2022 with a Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy. During her time at Dal, she was an active participant in numerous societies and volunteering opportunities, such as the Dalhousie and King’s College Debating Society, the Music and Healing Society of Dalhousie, and the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Building (QEII HSC) volunteer initiative, to name a few. She also took on various leadership roles, such as Public Relations Director in the Dalhousie Student Pharmacy Society (DSPS) and Junior then Senior Representative of Dalhousie University in the International Pharmaceutical Students Federation (IPSF), before getting appointed at the international level as Corporate Relations Coordinator to IPSF.
Johanne is presently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance at the Université de Montréal (UdeM), concurrently with a Doctor of Pharmacy for Pharmacists degree at the University of Toronto (UofT), and working as a community pharmacist part-time.
She is currently studying piano at UdeM under the guidance of Dr. Felipe Verdugo. Her former teachers include Renée Lavergne, Rachel Cotton, Mireille Santerre, and Marianne Fontaine. Johanne also received musical advice from world-renowned pianists Charles Richard-Hamelin and Richard Raymond.
A laureate of various local and provincial prizes and competitions, she continues to perform in solo or in collaboration with her peers for charity and private events, and participate as a pianist for initiatives touching current causes. This promising pianist is also preparing for upcoming competitions on the local, provincial, and international levels, with her next competition endeavour taking place in Paris in March 2024.
Passionate about promoting works by lesser known or forgotten composers, Johanne will be performing Anton Rubinstein’s Fourth Piano Concerto in D Minor with the NSYO during the 2023/24 season.
