Antonio Vivaldi (1678-1741)
In furore iustissimae irae, RV 626
Composed: 1722-23
Duration: 4 minutes

Vivaldi made several trips to Rome in the early 1720s, eventually moving to the city in 1722. During one of his trips, he composed In furore iustissimae irae, one of only three motets for soprano that have survived to this day. The title of this piece roughly translates to “In a fury of righteous anger,” and opens with a stormy power that transitions into a slow, lyrical plea for mercy before returning to the strong opening mood.
