Wash & Learn New Brunswick
Maritza Acevedo, Gisela Ciancia, and Anne-Marie Riveaux McMahon

The Wash & Learn Program was started in December 2019 in partnership with the Handy Street Laundromat and the New Brunswick Police Department. The program is centered around exposing learners to rich literacy experiences and the arts as a means to enhance and develop children's schema. The program fosters strong relationships between parents and various community stakeholders.  It creates opportunities for students and families to experience playful learning spaces where early literacy resources and time are specifically carved out for parents to talk, read, sing, and create with their young children alongside educators. The art-infused lessons make the experience more hands-on and highly engaging, providing families the much-needed guidance in supporting literacy development beyond the school building. In addition, the free books supplied by the program allow students to build their own at-home library, fostering a love of literacy within the home. The most magical part of this entire venture is that it happens while parents simultaneously do their laundry.
