Elena La Fulana is a Latin Grammy-nominated instrumentalist and singer/songwriter based in Washington, DC. Originally from Managua, Nicaragua, La Fulana identifies as both American and Nicaraguan and her music—which ranges from twangy, heartbreak-themed folk Americana to soothing, introspective, violin-infused Latin cumbia—reflects this dual identity. Her band, Elena & Los Fulanos, has been nominated twice for a Wammie Award, and their most recent album, Volcán (2017), was hailed as "a bilingual folk album for the resistance" by the Washington City Paper, a publication that also selected La Fulana for their “People Issue 2017” highlighting notable Washingtonians.
From 2019-2023, she toured with the Latin Grammy-winning, all-female mariachi group, Flor de Toloache, with whom she performed at the Kennedy Center Honors, The White House, and the Latin Grammys, and with artists such as John Legend, Los Lobos, Mon Laferte, Lila Downs, and Miguel. Her performance with Flor de Toloache earned her a Latin Grammy nomination in 2022.
Most recently, she toured with Sonia De Los Santos, a Latin Grammy-nominated family musician, with whom she performed in an off-Broadway production of Música in 2024. She is an eight-time recipient of the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities Fellowship grant.
