As the symphonic chorus-in-residence at Washington National Cathedral, the Cathedral Choral Society (CCS) continues to set the standard for vibrant, engaging concerts, attracting an in-person and streaming audience from all 50 states and more than 25 countries. Under Music Director Steven Fox’s leadership, the chorus has received outstanding critical acclaim for creative programming and a high standard of excellence.
Maestro Fox has led CCS in partnerships with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Atlanta Ballet, the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, the Washington Bach Consort, Pershing’s Own U.S. Army Blues, and the Heritage Signature Chorale. Recent programs have included Sergei Rachmaninoff’s The Bells, Hector Berlioz’s Roméo et Juliette, the Sacred Concert by Duke Ellington, and Giuseppe Verdi’s Messe da Requiem.
CCS offers educational opportunities through ongoing partnerships and digital initiatives. One such program is the I, Too, Sing America project, a performance partnership between CCS and the Heritage Signature Chorale to increase awareness and understanding of the music of African Americans. Additionally, each year CCS hosts a high school choir festival for more than 300 students from across the region.
Founded in 1941 just seven days before the attack on Pearl Harbor, CCS has served as a musical touchstone for the nation, singing in times of celebration and in times of mourning. The chorus is committed to featuring emerging voices and works actively to highlight the work of artists marginalized by race, gender, or social identity. The chorus was nominated for a 2021 Grammy Award for its recording of Alexander Kastalsky’s Requiem for Fallen Brothers.
