Director's Note

The year was 1979, I was a mere child, taking my first directing class. The assignment - find a scene to direct and present it in class. I found a new play that had just been released by Fireside Theater Book Club: Deathtrap, a new genre known as the comedy-thriller. Perfect! Picked a scene, cast my actors, rehearsed, and eagerly awaited the kudos to come rolling in from the teacher. Well...it was a nice try, not quite the success I had hoped for. But, hey, we all gotta start somewhere.

How nice then to finally get the opportunity to redeem myself and dig back into this play all these many years later. And to get to do it with this talented group of resident actors and the amazing tech and design teams here at Barter. Finding our way through the maze of surprises, thrills, twists and turns has been a joy and a heck of a lot of fun.

I hope you find it fun too. Allow yourself to lean into the suspense, the thrills, and the laughs. And on your way home, if you like it, talk about it, invite your friends to come see it, and experience Deathtrap too. But: please don’t give away the secrets and surprises!
