DIRECTOR'S NOTES

On September 11, 2001, 38 planes carrying 7,000 passengers from around the globe were diverted to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, doubling its population. Come From Away recounts the true story of that week’s events, as the Newfoundlanders welcome the “plane people” into their community.

We are honored to share this story with you as we commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Our company dreamed of bringing this show to Barter’s stage for many years, and I count myself lucky to be part of the incredible team that made that dream a reality. Realizing this production took great care and collaboration from every single artist involved. We knew pulling this off would require unrelenting attention to detail. From the precise shift of a chair to an instantaneous change in dialect, each moment calls for specificity and authenticity. Our company met each moment with greatness of spirit, much like the folks in Gander rose to the occasion to open their doors to new neighbors in a time of need.

The Town of Abingdon is about the same size as Gander. Appalachians and Newfoundlanders share a strong sense of resilience. Imagine this happening in our own backyard. How would you respond? Come From Away reminds us to hold joy with grief, to seek hope despite fear, and to embrace community during tragedy.
