About the Program
Experience the artistry of the Principal Musicians of the Greenville Symphony in an intimate chamber concert that highlights the brilliance of winds and strings. This captivating program features Beethoven’s Quintet for Winds, Martinů’s Nonet, and Kenji Bunch’s Megalopolis.

While the three works on the program come from distinct musical eras and styles, they share a common thread in their innovative use of instrumental color, texture, and energy to create vibrant musical landscapes.

• Beethoven’s Quintet in E-flat for Winds, Op. 71 (1800) embodies classical clarity and structure, showcasing lively interplay between wind instruments in a way that was groundbreaking for its time. It reflects Beethoven’s early experimentation with orchestration and instrumental dialogue.
• Martinů’s Nonet (1959) bridges classical tradition with modern sensibilities, blending folk influences, jazz-like rhythms, and rich harmonies. Like Beethoven’s quintet, it emphasizes dynamic conversations between instruments, but with a more fluid and contemporary sound.
• Inspired by the rhythmic vitality of Fela Kuti’s Afrobeat, Kenji Bunch’s Megalopolis (2017) explores the fusion of global musical influences, challenging the notion of a purely Western classical tradition. Through pulsating grooves and layered textures, Kenji Bunch creates a dynamic soundscape that reflects the interconnected nature of our modern world.

Together, these pieces form a journey through time—starting with classical elegance, moving through 20th-century lyricism, and culminating in a bold, modern soundscape. Each work highlights the expressive potential of chamber music while offering audiences a fresh and engaging listening experience.
