Nathan Aweau

Nathan launched his professional music career while still in college in 1983, performing with celebrated artists including Gabe Baltazar, Henry Kapono, Loyal Garner, and Nohelani Cypriano. He later joined the Hōkū Award–winning group Ka‘eo, the acclaimed ensemble The Ali‘i’s, and spent 16 years performing with the legendary Don Ho.

Beyond the stage, Nathan has contributed music to numerous commercial and media projects, including campaigns for Windward Mall, Meadow Gold, and JCB Credit Card. His work has appeared on Travel Channel programs, and he has created music beds and liners for stations such as KAPA Radio.

His 2001 debut album, E Apo Mai, earned major honors including Male Vocalist of the Year, Song of the Year, and Contemporary Hawaiian Album of the Year. The jazz album Bass Etude later showcased his electric bass work and won Jazz Album of the Year.

From 2003 to 2010, Nathan was a member of Hapa. Their 2005 album Maui reached No. 7 on Billboard’s World Music chart, and the group won four Hōkū Awards in 2006 — the same year Nathan earned another Male Vocalist of the Year honor. His Hawai‘i Classics Series release that year marked his third overall win, making him the first male artist to achieve that distinction.

In 2007, he released Kāne‘ohe, writing all twelve songs, playing every instrument, and engineering the album himself — cementing his reputation as a true multi-instrumentalist. His 2012 album ‘Io earned Song of the Year for “Uhiwai” and Island Album of the Year, along with multiple nominations.

Nathan continued his success with 2016’s “‘Āina Hānau,” which won Song of the Year and Island Contemporary Album of the Year, while his Japanese-language song “Inori” received major airplay in Japan. His 2018 release Mau Loa offered a personal tribute to his father and earned multiple award nominations.

His 2022 album Ho‘omana‘o highlights his versatility, blending Hawaiian traditions with jazz, folk, rock, and country influences. Honored as Island Album of the Year, it helped solidify Nathan’s standing as the only male artist to win Male Vocalist of the Year four times.

Slack Key 'Ohana

The group quickly earned consecutive finalist honors from the Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. Their self-titled debut album reached No. 2 on the iTunes World Music chart and won Best World Music Album at the San Diego Music Awards, while a live release, Live at Tiki Oasis, soared to No. 1. Slack Key ‘Ohana continues to tour and is preparing their third album, Mai Tais in Paradise, set for release in spring 2026.
