The Bad Plus is the ultimate original. A democratic unit with a clear vision and a refusal to conform to convention, the band has spent more than two decades playing with spirit and adventure, making its own rules and doing so with a bold sense of creativity and intent. Avoiding easy categorization, The Bad Plus has won critical acclaim and a legion of fans worldwide with its unique sound and flair for live performance.

Continuing to push boundaries, founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) embarked on a new, piano-less incarnation of the band in 2021 with Ben Monder (guitar) and Chris Speed (tenor saxophone), instigating a new wave of excitement and anticipation while re-energizing the band’s sound and inspiration. Speed brought experience with influential ensembles including Human Feel, Tim Berne’s Bloodcount, and John Hollenbeck’s Claudia Quintet, while Monder is a visionary guitarist whose collaborations have included David Bowie, Theo Bleckmann, Paul Motian, Donny McCaslin, and the Maria Schneider Orchestra. The quartet lineup provided an opportunity for The Bad Plus to evolve and continue to bridge genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of exceptional musicians working in perfect sync.

After more than a quarter century, three unique iterations, and sixteen studio albums, Reid Anderson and Dave King have decided to bring the world-renowned group’s one-of-a-kind career to an end. They will spend 2026 saying goodbye to fans around the world on their Farewell Tour.

A note from Dave and Reid 

“The Bad Plus has been a band for 26 years,” say Reid Anderson and Dave King. “That’s quite a long time! As we enter into year 27, after a great deal of soul-searching and consideration, we have decided to bring this chapter to a close. This year will be the final year of The Bad Plus. We share this news with heavy hearts, but also with great pride in what we have accomplished. It has been a privilege to share our music with the world, and we leave behind a body of work that we could not be more proud of.
