National Theatre Live distributes world-class theater straight from stages across the United Kingdom to cinema screens around the world.
Working with the best of British theater companies and producers, we simultaneously broadcast live theater to cinemas in the UK, Europe and sometimes North America, as well as capturing the live performance for encore screenings in other territories.
Our live broadcasts and screenings have been seen by over 10.7 million people in 2,500 cinemas in 65 countries since we launched in 2009.
The National Theatre’s mission is to make world-class theater, for everyone.
We create and share unforgettable stories with audiences across the UK and around the world — whether from our stages on London’s South Bank, on tour, in schools, on cinema screens, or streaming at home. Nothing brings us together like theater. The National Theatre creates ambitious works of participatory theater with local communities, and works extensively with young people and teachers across the UK through performance, writing and technical
programs to ignite the creativity of the next generation.

David Hare has written 29 full-length plays for the stage, 17 of which have been presented at the National Theatre, including Pravda (with Howard Brenton), Racing Demon, Murmuring Judges, The Absence of War, Stuff Happens and The Power of Yes; his adaptation of Katherine Boo’s Behind the Beautiful Forevers opened at the National Theatre in 2014. His many screenplays for film and TV include The Hours, The Reader, Page Eight, Turks & Caicos and Salting the Battlefield.
Skylight was first staged in the Cottesloe at the National Theatre in 1995, directed by Richard Eyre, with Michael Gambon as Tom Sergeant, Lia Williams as Kyra Hollis, and Daniel Betts as Edward Sergeant. The production won the Olivier Award for Best New Play, and transferred to the West End and later to Broadway. When it was revived at the Vaudeville Theatre in the West End in 1997, Bill Nighy played Tom Sergeant (the part he plays again in the production you will watch today), with Stella Gonet as Kyra and Theo Fraser Steele as Edward.
