Inside the Rehearsal Room

During the rehearsal process, the Henry V company worked alongside former Royal Marines Commando Tom Leigh. In this excerpt from the Henry V program, he discusses his role on the production.

My role has been to advise the entire creative process, from costume to directing to sound in order to ensure that the production reflects authentic military life. Using my experience as an ex - Royal Marines Commando, I can give more context to the production and offer suggestions on how characters talk, fight and even think.

I have also worked alongside our Movement Director, Benoit Swan Pouffer, on mixing the military world with the dance world within the battle sequences, which has been incredibly interesting. We have mixed free flowing dance movement with violent movements which can be quite shocking. This creates a beautiful but also quite horrifying picture that I think reflects the reality of conflict.

I’ve been giving the actors lots of information about the journey you go on through a conflict, the kind of things you’ll see and what that does to a person. Having undergone therapy, I am now capable of analyzing why you might feel certain emotions during and after conflict, which I think will make for some very interesting scenes.
