Three seminal artists, featured regularly at Maui’s renowned Slack Key Show®, share the uniquely Hawaiian styles of slack key guitar and ‘ukulele with Hawaiian songs, both traditional and contemporary. The evening shares slack key guitar styles and tunings, which began to develop when Mexican cowboys (vaqueros) brought guitars along with their ranching knowledge to Hawai‘i in the early 19th century. A few decades later, the ‘ukulele took root, originating from the little 4-string machete de braga introduced by Portuguese immigrants. Ever since, Hawaiians have made these instruments their own, continually evolving in the hands of such masters as George Kahumoku Jr., Daniel Ho, and Tia Carrere.
