Dear Friends,
It’s my pleasure to welcome you to Irvine Barclay Theatre for tonight’s thrilling concert of the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West. The Barclay has showcased several military bands throughout its 33 years of presenting the performing arts. Each time, the concert tickets are free and available to our Orange County community. We invite you to sit back and enjoy, or get up and dance to, these beloved American anthems.
We are dedicating tonight’s performance to the legacy of General William “Bill” Lyon. After an illustrious military career, General Lyon was a driving force in Orange County industry, philanthropy, and culture. The General was gifted at executing his vision, always articulated optimistically; he was well-respected in his many spheres of influence. I had the pleasure of working with him during his tenure on the board of the Orange County Performing Arts Center (now Segerstrom Center for the Arts). It was so unfortunate that Bill passed during the pandemic, as there was never a public-facing memorial held for him. When the USAF Band concert opportunity came our way, I felt that this inspirational, patriotic community event would be a fantastic way to celebrate the General’s life and legacy. A further serendipitous detail is that 2023 would have been his 100th birthday.
We’re thrilled to see the military memorabilia and equipment displayed throughout the Barclay plaza and lobby, courtesy of the Lyon Air Museum. Thank you for bringing us a glimpse of the General’s fantastic collection.
I would also like to thank and acknowledge Commercial Bank of California, one of the General’s many business ventures which he co-founded 20 years ago, for sponsoring tonight’s concert.
Finally, I would like to personally thank Bill H. Lyon, Jr., Paul Folino, Ash Patel, Roger Kirwan, Mark Chapin Johnson, and Shaun Skeris for being instrumental in making tonight’s celebration a success. Thank you, gentlemen, for your continued partnership and support.
Tonight will be a very meaningful and memorable evening for all who admired, respected, and loved General Lyon – a true local legend. Thank you for joining us.
