About the Show

OUR TOWN ~ Story of the Play by Thornton Wilder

In the first act the author genially outlines the history of the town, which is Grover's Corners, New Hampshire, and something of the character of its citizens. Then he carries you into the houses of the Gibbs and Webb families, substantial homes containing substantial folks. You arrive at breakfast time and are carried through one entire day in the lives of these good people.

The second act concerns the love affair between young George Gibbs and little Emily Webb, and thus culminates in a moving wedding scene, which contains all those elements of poignant sorrow and abundant happiness that make for solemnity and impressiveness.

In the third act we are led to the cemetery on the hill, where many of the townspeople we have come to know so well are patiently and smilingly awaiting not 'judgment' but greater understanding. Into their midst is led the bride, a little timid at first, a little wishful to go back to life, to live again with her memories. But she is shown how impossible, how futile it is to return. The past cannot be re-lived. Living people, humans, occupied with their petty occupations and small thoughts, know little of true joy or happiness. Truth is to be found only in the future.

A note from the director

This play is called Our Town, and as you may have guessed, it’s about our town. Not exactly this town—I didn’t grow up in Thomaston—but you know the type. It’s the kind of place where 90% of the people who grew up there stay, fall in love, and die there. It’s a town where everyone knows each other—whether it’s the Sunday morning crew at the diner after church, the childhood friends who’ve been close since elementary school, or the guys gathering for their regular Thursday night at the bar.

But whether it’s Thomaston, Ellington, Grover’s Corners, or any small town, it doesn’t really matter. Because it’s more than just that.

Our Town isn’t just about small-town life—it’s about the small town we all carry with us every day. Thornton Wilder uses the town as an allegory for the profound smallness of our own lives. Through Emily in the third act, he shows us that life, in all its simplicity, is fleeting. We get caught up in our own "small-town problems"—whether we’re teenagers so in love we can’t see beyond the moment, the choir director drowning his worries in a drink, or the married woman dreaming of life beyond her town. We become so wrapped up in our earthly troubles that we often forget to look beyond ourselves at the vastness of the world around us. Each day rolls on, the sun rises and sets, and we do the one thing we know how to do best: live.

In the graveyard, Wilder asks us to pause and consider what it truly means to be alive. Surrounded by others who, like us, are too busy with living to stop and reflect, we forget to appreciate the fleeting nature of our time together. Wilder reminds us that life is small, precious, and temporary—and we too often take it for granted.

This play invites us to see the beauty in the moments we often overlook, to acknowledge the wonder of simply being alive in this brief, shared experience we all hold. As we navigate the rituals of daily existence—birth, love, death—we are reminded that, in the grand sweep of time, every life is uniquely significant and yet part of something much larger.
