As a young girl, I remember watching the 2001 film “Legally Blonde” and immediately wanted to be just like Elle. Mostly for her extravagant pink outfits and cute dog. Well that, and I definitely remember begging my parents for Elle’s Audi convertible that she drives in the sequel. As an adult who admittedly drives a more sensible vehicle (although I did get myself a perfect ‘lil pup- shoutout to Sir Reginald!), I find I still want to be like her, except now for different reasons. I am inspired by her kindness, independence, and strength through adversity. I’ve always been drawn to stories of strong, independent women, as well as stories that simply bring joy. For both of those reasons, I am particularly excited to have the opportunity to share with others this story that has taught me a lot about what I truly value.
For those of you who don’t know the movie, you’re in for a treat. For those of you who do, this musical brings us some of that movie nostalgia but with a fun, pop score and special surprises along the way that are sure to make you laugh and smile. As one of the best screen-to-stage adaptations in musical theatre, its cinematic roots can be enjoyed by how it is written to move briskly in and out of locations while connecting it all through a wonderful score of music.
LEGALLY BLONDE: THE MUSICAL, at its core, is a simple coming of age story about perseverance, individuality, self-confidence, breaking stereotypes, supporting others and well, finding love along the way. While we might not all be trying to make our way at Harvard Law School, I believe most of us have been up against people, situations, or jobs where we questioned if we were good enough, smart enough, strong enough. As we rapidly approach a New Year and inevitably go through our own personal audits and reflections about the people we are and the people we want to be, I wish for you to carry the messages of this story with you and hopefully leave the theatre with these two empowering thoughts:
You are beautiful, and you are enough. Celebrate that. But also, celebrate those who are different from you. As Elle Woods would say it:
“You must always have faith in people. And, most importantly, you must always have faith in yourself.”
Mandy Modic, director of LEGALLY BLONDE: THE MUSICAL
