Welcome to Monkswell Manor! And more importantly, welcome to the most successful and longest running play in the English Theatrical Canon! As of the opening of our production here at Riverside Center, the Original London Production is well into its 74th year! That is over 30,000 consecutive performances with an estimated audience of over 10 million! But, as the director of this production, I have just one question for you, the audience member: Can you keep a secret? Because for over seven decades, audiences worldwide have entered this parlor, witnessed a murder, discovered the culprit, and exited bound by a sacred, unwritten pact: preserve the mystery. Today we ask you to do the same because, at its heart, Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap is the ultimate theatrical secret.
And as Agatha Christie would be quick to tell us: keeping secrets is not just a theatrical gimmick-It is a universal human condition. Every character trapped in this snowbound guesthouse carries a hidden past, a buried trauma, or a masked identity. Like them, we all walk through life harboring parts of ourselves we choose not to reveal to the world. We protect our secrets to survive, to reinvent ourselves, or to shield the people we love. Christie masterfully shows us that under the right pressure—like a raging blizzard and a sudden murder—the walls we build around our secrets can, and will, eventually crumble.
So keep that in mind today as we invite you to play detective. Watch the subtle shifts in body language. Listen to what is left unsaid. Notice how quickly paranoia blooms when trust is removed.
And know that when you exit the theatre at the end of our show you too will become a keeper of the secret. We will ask you to maintain that legendary tradition as so many millions have before you. But also, as you leave the theater tonight, we hope you ponder a quieter question: what are the secrets you carry, and what would it take for yours to be revealed?
Thank you for supporting live theater and joining our circle of trust.
Enjoy the mystery!
