There are certain moments in our lives when the lights come up, the orchestra begins to play, and something inside us changes forever.

For me, that moment was Sweeney Todd.

As a sophomore in college, I had the extraordinarily good fortune to see Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd on Broadway with Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou. I went into the theater as a young student studying broadcast journalism and came out knowing that my life had taken a different direction. The experience was so powerful, so theatrical, so unlike anything I had encountered before, that it compelled me to change my focus and pursue a life in the theater.

So, to say that I approach Sweeney Todd with reverence is an understatement.

Stephen Sondheim’s work has always represented to me the very highest possibilities of musical theater, music and language working together to reveal character, advanced story, create atmosphere, and express what ordinary conversation cannot. Sweeney Todd is thrilling, frightening, funny, heartbreaking, and theatrical. It is a work of extraordinary complexity and brilliance, and I feel privileged to be entrusted with telling this story.

And yet, reverence does not mean putting a work behind glass.

Our goal with this production has been to honor the brilliance of Sondheim and the extraordinary theatrical tradition of Sweeney Todd while allowing ourselves the freedom to see it with fresh eyes. Our set and costumes bring a new visual perspective to this familiar world, but perhaps our greatest exploration has been with the people who inhabit it.

Because beneath the blood, the revenge, the dark humor, and the gothic machinery of this extraordinary musical are human beings.

Sweeney is not simply a figure of vengeance. Mrs. Lovett is not simply a comic force of nature. Anthony, Johanna, Judge Turpin, Tobias, Beggar Woman, and all the others are people shaped by longing, loss, loneliness, obsession, fear, love, and the desperate desire to matter to someone. The more deeply we searched for their humanity, the more surprising—and, I believe, more heartbreaking—the story became.

That is the paradox of Sweeney Todd: the larger-than-life theatricality makes human moments matter even more.

I hope you will experience both sides of this production—the grandeur and intimacy, the darkness and the humor, the horror and the humanity. Most of all, I hope you will feel the extraordinary generosity of Sondheim’s artistry and understand why, all those years ago, sitting in a Broadway theater as a college student, I realized that this was the world in which I wanted to live.

This production is my tribute to that moment, to the artists who inspired me, and above all to the brilliance of Stephen Sondheim.

KEVIN CLEARY (u/s Sweeney Todd) is excited to be back at Riverside for Sweeney Todd. Most recently, you may have seen him as Giles in The Mousetrap, Bob Wallace in White Christmas, or as Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2024 he was also seen in Beautiful, the Carole King Musical, Murder on the Orient Express, and Jersey Boys. He has performed in multiple Riverside productions since his debut in the 2002 production of Oliver and has worked as a member of the technical staff in many more. His favorite roles include Gaston in Beauty and the Beast, Snowboy in West Side Story, Legles in Les Misérables, and Gandalf in the children’s theater production of The Hobbit.

MADISON COX (Johanna) is so excited to be back at Riverside Center for the Performing Arts playing one of her dream roles. You may have seen her here last as Amy in Little Women or Natalie in Next to Normal. Other recent theatrical credits include Mary in It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play (Swift Creek Mill), Dora in Night Must Fall (Swift Creek Mill), Sally in Cabaret (Jewish Family Theatre), and Columbia in The Rocky Horror Show (Richmond Triangle Players). Madison is a 2025 graduate of VCU with a B.S. in Mass Communications. She sends love to her family, her boyfriend Trace, and their two (cat) children for their endless support, and is so proud of this incredible cast and creative team for bringing this show to life. AMELIA ELIAS (Ensemble) is a New York-based dancer, singer, and actor. Originally from Culpeper, VA, she is excited to be performing near home in her first show at Riverside Center. Favorite past credits include A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (Phoebe), Singin’ In The Rain (Kathy u/s), Chicago (Liz/Ensemble), and Cry-Baby: The Musical (Allison). As a dancer, she has performed in pieces at the Agnes Varis Performing Arts Center and Spark Theatre Festival in NYC. She received her BFA in musical theatre from Otterbein University, and is an alum of the Broadway Choreography Intensive at Dance Lab New York. MARCO GIACONA (Anthony Hope) is thrilled to be making his Riverside Center debut in Sweeney Todd! ANDREA KAHANE (Ensemble) You may recognize Andrea from the RCPA stage as she has been a performer here for many years. Andrea studied for two summers in Italy upon graduation from Indiana University School of Music. She has sung with the opera companies of Orlando, Knoxville, Nashville, Milwaukee, Indianapolis and Chautauqua. Highlights in Andrea’s career were performing as the soloist in John Rutter’s Magnificat at Carnegie Hall with John Rutter conducting and touring with Starlight Musicals in Show Boat starring Van Johnson. Favorite Riverside roles include General Cartwright in Guys and Dolls, Aunt March in Little Women, Miss Maudie in To Kill A Mockingbird, Mrs. Hubbard in Murder on the Orient Express, Marge in The Bridges of Madison County, Emma Goldman in Ragtime, Florence Foster Jenkins in Souvenir, Katie in Meet Me in St Louis, Mama in Bright Star, Rosie in Mamma Mia!, Mrs. Pearce in My Fair Lady, and Golde in Fiddler on the Roof. IAN LANE (The Beadle) Upon graduation from Virginia Tech, Ian Lane was accepted into The United States Army Chorus, the vocal counterpart to The United States Army Band, “Pershing’s Own.” As a member of the world’s most prestigious all male ensemble, he was a featured soloist across the nation, performing for audiences ranging from intimate gatherings of U.S. and foreign dignitaries at the White House, Capitol, Naval Observatory, and Joint Chiefs’ Quarters to many well-known and prestigious venues with audiences in the thousands. Favorite Riverside Center roles: Dave, The Full Monty (featuring Sally Struthers); Sir Bedevere/Mrs. Galahad, Monty Python’s SPAMALOT; Joey, Sister Act; Big Bopper, et. al., Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story; Samuel, The Pirates of Penzance; Abner Dillon, 42nd Street with Andrea McArdle; and Colonel Tom Parker in Heartbreak Hotel. Most recently, Ian delighted audiences as Big Jule in Guys and Dolls. A versatile performer, Mr. Lane is often a featured guest performer for various orchestras, choral societies, ceremonies, and special events.

CLAY W. MUIR (Male Swing) is a DMV/New York–based actor, singer, and choreographer, thrilled to return to Riverside again for Sweeney Todd! DANIEL PIPPERT (Adolfo Pirelli, u/s Judge Turpin) is so thankful to be returning to Riverside Center, previously appearing in Jesus Christ Superstar (Pilate, Assistant Director), Camelot (Lionel, Assistant Director), Bright Star (Daryl), and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Ensemble). He also directed last year's production of White Christmas and will return to direct A Christmas Carol this holiday season. AUSTIN ROSE (Ensemble) is a DC based actor, singer, and recording artist with a limitless passion for their art. Regional credits include Jersey Boys (Nick Devito), Legally Blonde (Nikos Argitakos), Children of Eden (Seth/Shem), 42nd Street (Pat Denning), A Christmas Carol (Young Ebenezer), and Nevermore (Player 1). Austin is the proud owner of a BFA in Acting from Syracuse University. Additionally, Austin has written, recorded, and produced their own pop album titled “Self-Employed” available to stream on all streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music.

CHRISTOPHER SANDERS* (Sweeney Todd) is an award-winning actor and singer, who has performed in venues around the world. He had the pleasure of performing with Sally Struthers, George Hearn, Andrea McArdle, Roddy McDowell, Carol Lawrence, John Raitt, Debbie Boone and Rosemary Clooney. VERONICA SCHOENSTER (Ensemble, u/s Johanna) (she/her) is exited to return to Riverside Center in the production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. She has been a performer at Kings Dominion as JT in Charlie Brown Hoedown, Sounds of the Nativity and Octoberfest. Her theater roles include: James and the Giant Peach! and Seussical Jr (Ensemble) Riverside Center, Chick's Diner (Marie) Louisa Arts Center. She choreographed Matilda at LAC and Newsies for LCHS. Community Theatre Roles: The Prom (Alyssa Greene) 4CP, The Lightning Theif (Annabeth Chase) Live Arts, Anything Goes (featured dancer) 4CP, Chicago (Velma Kelly) LCHS, Mean Girls (Regina George) LCHS, and Peter Pan (Tinker Bell) LCHS. JOHN SHELDON (Tobias Ragg) is a Richmond/New York City–based actor, singer, and dancer. ANDY WYNN (Judge Turpin) is an award-winning actor, singer, and mover born and raised in Northern Virginia. He is thrilled to be returning to the Riverside Center after eliciting laughs as the Major General in The Pirates of Penzance. Film/Television/Commercials include Academy Award-winning Best Picture, The Artist, The Mentalist, Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn, and a National Kraft Mac & Cheese spot. Regional credits encompass Of Mice and Men (Lennie), Figaro (Count Almaviva), Camelot (Sir Sagramore/Ensemble), Romeo and Juliet (Lord Capulet), The Tempest (Stephano), Aladdin (Jafar), and Great Expectations (Magwitch). He won Los Angeles’ Ovation award for Parade and was nominated for a Helen Hayes award for Interact’s production of The Pirates of Penzance at the Folger Shakespeare Library. He holds an MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University and an MSW from George Mason University. In addition to performing, he is a full-time licensed clinical social worker in private practice and a proud father of four. He dedicates this performance to his partner-in-life, Aliyah, who encourages his passions daily!

AIMÉE ZAPPA (u/s Mrs. Lovett, Female Swing) has been acting and working professionally in theatre since the age of 16, and following a brief two-decade hiatus to raise a family, she is having the time of her life being back at it. She made her Riverside Center debut earlier this season with Little Women. Off B-way: The Woman in Black. National Tour: The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. Regional: Forestburgh Playhouse, Riverside Theatre (FL). As a casting professional, Aimée worked on numerous Broadway and regional productions including The Full Monty (Broadway and National Tour), The Acting Company, Alley Theatre, The Old Globe, and the world premiere reading of the play Jump Rope starring Andrew McCarthy. She holds a BA in Theatre from University of Mary Washington

PATRICK A’HEARN (Director) Is the CEO and Producing Artistic Director at the Riverside Center for the Performing Arts. He enters his 15th year at Riverside Center, leading the company’s transition into a professional regional theater and its status as a 501-C3 Nonprofit organization. Patrick has directed over 30 plus shows at Riverside and received many accolades and awards for his direction. Most notably groundbreaking are productions of Les Misérables, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, Ragtime and most recently The Wizard of Oz. Mr. A’Hearn was a member of the original Broadway cast of Les Misérables and can be heard on the original cast recording. He has appeared on Broadway and in the national tours of Les Misérables, Chicago (with Chita Rivera and Ben Vereen), The Phantom of the Opera, The King and I (starring Rudolph Nureyev), The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber (with Michael Crawford), and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (with Andy Gibb), as well as in the acclaimed Forbidden Broadway in New York. He was featured in the world premiere of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Requiem Variations, performed as Marvin Hamlisch’s principal vocalist in Mr. Hamlisch’s Concert Tour, and appeared as Freddy in My Fair Lady in the European tour starring Maximillian Schell. Patrick has performed principal roles at many regional theaters across the United States, most notably the title role in The Student Prince with Jerome Hines and Christine Andreas. A featured soloist in Broadway Pops programs with major symphonic orchestras throughout the U.S., Patrick has released two nationally distributed CDs: Patterns of the Heart and By George! —The Music of George Gershwin. He assisted Trevor Nunn and John Caird in the staging of the first national tour of Les Misérables.

STEPHANIE WOOD (Assistant Director/Choreographer) Stephanie Wood (Assistant Director/Choreographer) is honored to serve as Assistant Director/Choreographer of Sweeney Todd! Choreographer credits: Guys and Dolls, White Christmas, Little Women, The Sound of Music, Jesus Christ Superstar, Wizard of Oz, 42nd Street, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Escape to Margaritaville, Bright Star, Riverside Christmas Spectacular, Annie, Beauty and the Beast, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Some Enchanted Evening, Riverside Awards, Hersheypark, and many other productions. Riverside performance credits include 42nd Street (Anytime Annie), A Chorus Line (Judy), Annie (starring Sally Struthers), and many other productions. Other performance credits: American Music Theatre, Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens, Hersheypark. Stephanie is the 2019 Broadway World Central Virginia Award Winner for Best Choreography. Stephanie graduated with honors from Oklahoma City University with a Bachelor’s degree in Dance Performance.

CARSON EUBANK (Music Director) (Music Supervisor/Conductor) is delighted to be collaborating with this stellar orchestra and cast to bring this bucket list show to the Riverside stage. As the Associate Producing Artistic Director/Music Supervisor of Riverside Center, Carson is excited to help lead Riverside into this exciting next chapter and continue to produce the exceptional quality of entertainment that audiences have come to expect. A native of Richmond, VA and proud graduate of James Madison University (JMU), Carson served as the staff accompanist and Music Director for the School of Theater and Dance at his alma mater. In addition, he has music directed and played numerous shows and national tours throughout the region. NATIONAL TOURS: Wicked, Mean Girls (keyboard sub) REGIONAL (select credits): over 20 shows at Riverside, most recently Guys and Dolls, White Christmas, Sound of Music (Riverside). CHRISTIAN FLEMING (Scenic Designer) Recent credits include Gene & Gilda (Off-Broadway), Outside In (Lincoln Center), and the new play Flawless (Penguin Rep). His work has been seen around the country at companies like Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Opera, Titusville Playhouse, Arizona Broadway Theatre, Nebraska Shakespeare, Pittsburgh Playhouse, New London Barn, and the REV. WESTON COREY (Lighting Designer) Weston Corey is a proud VCU graduate with a BFA in lighting design. He has worked all throughout the country on various projects including theatre, dance, events and architecture. He spent several years as the Lighting Director and Resident Lighting Designer for The Sharon L. Morse PAC in The Villages, FL, where he designed: Proof, Bad Jews, Frankie and Johnny, Company, Red, Tell Me on a Sunday, and The Story of My Life and worked with many touring shows, from Broadway to rock concerts. After returning to Virginia in 2018, he has been heavily involved with the RVA theatre scene. Recent designs at Riverside include: Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, The Sound Of Music, Next To Normal, Jesus Christ Superstar, They’re Playing Our Song and Beautiful as well as many others. Weston works full time at VCU in the theatre department supporting lighting and audio, and is the owner of WTC-Design, LLC where he works as a lighting controls consultant and installer, as well as a theatrical designer, for museums, architecture, schools, houses of worship, and theatres across the east coast. wtc-design.com. @wtcdesignrva.

BEE GABLE (Costume Designer)  is a costume designer and concept illustrator whose love of little details and costume history drive their story telling. Their work as a illustrator and design assistant has jump-started dozens of productions both on and off Broadway including "Othello" "Hell's Kitchen," "Gypsy," and "Buena Vista Social Club", and their list of costume design credits continues to grow regionally and on this same stage with "The Sound of Music" and "Little Women." BETHANY CHEEK (Wig Designer) is thrilled to be a part of the Sweeney team as wig designer and resident design assistant! She started with the costume department in 2019 as a child wrangler and dresser for Annie. Bethany transitioned into the role of costume shop first hand and wig supervisor in 2024. Some of her favorite shows she has worked on include: Ragtime, 42nd Street, Jersey Boys, Beautiful: The Carole King Musical and Little Women. So much love and thanks to my family, friends, and Cody.

JUSTICE CRAIG (Sound Designer) (they/them; Sound Designer) Justice is a Richmond-based sound designer with recent credits including The Mousetrap, Guys & Dolls, Lion King Jr, Mr. Burns a Post Electric Play, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, SMOKE, and Twelfth Night. They are passionate about sound’s role in storytelling and grateful to collaborate with this team.

REILLY COOPER (Properties Master)  is thrilled to be working with the Riverside team to bring Sweeney Todd to the stage. Reilly began working as an overhire with Riverside in August of 2021, before working his way up to the Props Master position, working jobs in the shop, backstage, and even on stage along the way.
