Welcome to the Shenandoah Conservatory’s production of Our Town.
It was 1938 when Our Town had its world premiere, to critical acclaim, in New York City at the Henry Miller Theatre. Almost ninety years later, Our Town is still the most beloved and most produced piece of American theatre of all time.
It’s a story that resonates within our very bones as “something eternal” and deeply connected to the human experience. It’s a play of everyday life. It’s a play of bygone days. It’s a play of hopes and dreams. It’s a play of love and sacrifice. It’s a play of mountains and rain and stars. It’s a play that remembers, or perhaps summons within us, qualities and values we thought were long abandoned or forgotten. We discover, once again, that they were there, within us, all along. “Waiting.”
Thornton Wilder, himself, described Our Town as “the life of a village against the life of the stars.” What a remarkable summary.
Thank you for being here. It means a great deal to us that you are part of our community. We believe in this art form and its ability to connect us all, as well as to remind us what is truly enduring and important. So, on behalf of our incredibly talented and hardworking cast and crew, we give you — Thornton Wilder’s Our Town.
