Dear Friends,
Thank you for attending this year’s production of It’s a Grand Night for Singing. I still marvel at the fact that Grand Night has been going on for 32 years. That is due in no small part to your support of this production and the UK Opera Theatre program. We are so excited to give these opportunities to the students and community members who participate each year.
You might be interested in our numbers this year. We have a cast of 45, comprised of UK students, valued community members, and talented high school students. Most members of our creative and production team average over 20 years or more with Grand Night. If you put those years together, you are talking over 200 years of experience working together to create this summer kick-off for you! We listened to over 200 songs and pared it down to 23. We have showcased songs from Broadway’s golden age with pieces from Gypsy and Carousel as well as pieces from new hits like Shucked, Hadestown, and & Juliet. We love to include Disney classics as well. Plus, you will see over 350 costumes on stage tonight.
All of this is put together in the span of 5 weeks! We start rehearsing the day after graduation and we open 5 weeks later. We want to give our students the opportunity to be involved in a high impact, high energy production that is put together in a short amount of time, similar to the way Broadway shows are put together. We want them to experience that while they are in college so when they get out into the profession, they are aware of the requirements and rigors of doing this work.
We could not do this without you, our audience. Your contribution to this show is crucial. You purchase tickets, you have helped with scholarship support, you bring friends to the production, and you return each year. These things help us to be able to put on a world class show for our university, our city, and our community. Sit back and enjoy the show. If you like what you see, please encourage your friends to see the show. Or, join us for a second or a third time. As you are making your philanthropic decisions, we also hope you will consider UK Opera Theatre in your plans. Your contributions help us support these talented students, making a difference in their lives and in our community.

It's a Grand Night for Singing! from the 1945 film, State Fair
by Rodgers and Hammerstein
All: It’s a Grand Night for Singing,
The moon is flying high,
And somewhere a bird who is bound to be heard,
Is throwing his heart at the sky!
It’s a Grand Night for Singing,
The stars are bright above,
The earth is aglow and to add to the show,
I think I am falling in love!
Low Voices: Maybe it’s more than the moon,
Maybe it’s more than the birds,
Maybe it’s more than the sight of the night
In a light too lovely for words.
High Voices: Maybe it’s more than the Earth,
Shiny and silvery blue,
Maybe the reason I’m feeling this way
Has something to do with you!
All: It’s a Grand Night for Singing,
The stars are bright above,
The earth is aglow and to add to the show,
I think I am falling in love!
Falling, falling in love!
