Welcome

Dear Friends,

Welcome to transcenDANCE, an experience that resonates with the vibrant pulse of our times. This evening, we embark on a journey through contemporary stories told through the distinct and powerful voices of each choreographer. It is a privilege to share this experience with you, one dedicated to celebrating the richness of artistic expression within the world of dance.

transcenDANCE is more than just a performance; it's an invitation to a conversation. Each piece you will witness offers a unique perspective, a narrative woven through movement, music, and emotion. These are stories that reflect the complexities of our world, stories that challenge us, inspire us, and, ultimately, connect us. We believe that dance, in its most dynamic form, can be a powerful medium for exploring the human experience, and these three voices exemplify that belief beautifully.

As we move forward as an organization, it is your presence and engagement that fuels our passion and allows us to continue pushing the boundaries of what dance can be. We are committed to presenting works that are not only technically brilliant but also culturally relevant and deeply meaningful. We strive to be a space where distinct voices are celebrated and where the power of dance can truly transcend.

We invite you to delve deeper into the world of The Washington Ballet. Within this program, you will find information about our artists, our mission, and the many ways you can become more involved with our community. Discover how you can further your connection to The Washington Ballet and be a part of our ongoing story.

Thank you for joining us tonight for transcenDANCE. We hope you leave feeling inspired, moved, and connected through the power of dance.

SHINING BRIGHT AT SE CAMPUS
Spotlight on Tammy Hurt

Tammy Hurt, School Principal of the TWSB Southeast campus, is a DC native who grew up studying at Jones Haywood School of Ballet.  She was the Director of Community Engagement at Collage Dance Collective in Memphis, Tennessee, and taught for 10 years at Duke Ellington School of the Arts.  She has been the Principal of TWSB’s SE Campus since January of 2022.

As Principal, Tammy is deeply invested in the well-being of the SE dancer family.  She is committed to ensuring that TWSB has a healthy, vital presence at THEARC and in the surrounding community.  She is active in the studio, teaching, choreographing, and supporting a well-rounded teaching staff.  She is a mentor for the students in the SE Campus Performance Ensemble, the dance ambassadors who represent TWSB at community events and performances citywide.

Ms. Tammy’s favorite thing about the SE Campus is the deeply embedded village mentality - a warm, supportive environment that feels like home, underpinned by a strong parent base.  “I love supporting the children,” she says.  “I love hugging them, feeding them, clothing them - all the things that we do here.” Her goal for each of them is to see them become well-rounded, secure, confident dancers and productive members of society.
