Creating A Play For Babies
By Mara McEwin
Following the wonderful success of our plays for the early years, Hatched and Olive & Pearl, I wanted to make a piece specifically for babies ages 6-18 months. Flutter is an original discovery play that introduces the very young to the four seasons. Although I conceived, directed and wrote the play, it was really our exceptional ensemble of performers and collaborators who helped devise the work. This piece was put on hold during the pandemic, but we began in-person rehearsals in the summer of 2021. It has since gone on to tour including performances at Lincoln Center.
Flutter explores the seasons through a scripted journey of visuals, sounds, tactile objects, language exploration & an open concept of play. Within the language, I wanted to explore nursery rhymes and lullabies of many cultures. Adapting the translation and rhythms, to complement the movement, the language remains an homage to the originals, but also explores the similarities and differences, delving into a baby’s first sense of the world. As a storyteller for 30 years, I have spent much of these decades studying world folklore.
Long before the Information Age, cultures often mirrored each other, despite being oceans apart. This proves true in nursery rhymes and lullabies. In an age of magnifying our differences, I truly believe art and story is what will weave humanity back together.
“Thistle-Seed, Thistle-Seed”
Traditional Chinese-American Nursery Rhyme.
“Hush A Bye Baby”
It is thought to have originated in England.
Words Originally Published In 1765.
“Little Baby Sleep”
The first verse that we sing is a Chippewa lullaby for children.
Treehouse Shakers added to this poem and created the melody.
“The North Wind Doth Blow”
English Nursery Rhyme.
