The Playhouse acknowledges the indigenous peoples and nations of the Paugussett that stewarded the land and waterways of Westport, Connecticut. We honor and respect the enduring relationship that exists between these peoples and nations and this land.
Named after former artistic director Joanne Woodward, the Playhouse’s nationally renowned Woodward Internship is offered to students, recent college graduates, and young professionals looking to gain experience in the highly competitive field of professional theater, where academic experience alone often proves insufficient to a successful transition into a professional career. The training of emerging professionals in the theater has formed a vital part of our mission since our program began in 1946. Many artists and administrators have worked as Playhouse interns, including Stephen Sondheim.
Positions span the departments of stage management, company management, directing, technical direction and production, marketing, development, and general management. Each Playhouse intern is immersed in their chosen field alongside theater professionals and gains both experience and professional connections. The internship includes mentorship with the department heads as well as with the Playhouse associate producer/director of production. Interns are paid a stipend and are offered seminars featuring members of the Playhouse staff, artists, and other leaders of the industry.
Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to their chosen field, submit an application, and go through an interview process with Playhouse staff. Westport Country Playhouse is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to creating a diverse company.
