It’s the 16th birthday of Princess Aurora, and all are invited to celebrate. Townsfolk dance with flower garlands, and four suitors present roses to the Princess in the Rose Adagio, signifying her coming of age. A mysterious figure emerges and offers a gift to the Princess. As predicted, she pricks her finger and collapses into a deep sleep. The Lilac Fairy appears and casts a spell of slumber over all the kingdom, which will only be broken when the Princess wakes.
