King Florestan calls for the christening of his daughter, Princess Aurora. The fairies, most notably the Lilac Fairy, are invited to the ceremony and bestow gifts on the Princess. All is well until the arrival of Carabosse, a wicked fairy who is angry with the King for not inviting her to the christening. She places an evil curse on the Princess, condemning her to die on her 16th birthday at the prick of her finger. Luckily, the Lilac Fairy intervenes. Though unable to reverse Carabosse’s curse, she declares Princess Aurora will not die on her 16th birthday, but instead will fall into a 100-year slumber, after which she’ll be awoken by the kiss of a prince.
