Roman Mejia, born in Fort Worth, Texas, began ballet at age 3 with his parents and joined the Mejia Ballet Academy at 13. He attended the School of American Ballet's summer programs in 2014 and 2015 and enrolled full-time in 2015. Mejia became an apprentice with New York City Ballet (NYCB) in August 2017, joined the corps de ballet in November 2017, was promoted to soloist in October 2021, and principal dancer in February 2023.
He has performed notable roles in Kyle Abraham's Love Letter (on shuffle); George Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante, “Emeralds” from Jewels, The Nutcracker (Candy Cane, Cavalier, Tea), Rubies, Tschaikovsky Pas de Deux, Western Symphony; Peter Martins’ Romeo + Juliet (Mercutio), The Sleeping Beauty (Court Jester), Swan Lake (Jester); Justin Peck’s Copland Dance Episodes, The Times Are Racing; Alexei Ratmansky’s Namouna, A Grand Divertissement; Jerome Robbins’ Dances at a Gathering, Fancy Free, The Four Seasons; Christopher Wheeldon’s DGV: Danse à Grande Vitesse.
He has originated roles in works by Silas Farley, Edwaard Liang, Justin Peck, Alexei Ratmansky, and Christopher Wheeldon. Mejia was named a 2022 Vail Dance Festival Artist in Residence, featured in Dance Magazine's "25 To Watch" in 2019, and was awarded a Princess Grace Foundation Dance Fellowship.
