Violin Sonata No. 5 in F, Op. 24, “Spring”
Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827)
[2015]
Beethoven composed his Violin Sonata No. 5, later nicknamed “Spring,” in 1801, at a moment when his style was opening into greater lyricism and breadth. The sonata begins with an unhurried, singing theme that sets the tone for a work marked by clarity and balance. A poised Adagio follows, then a brief, good natured Scherzo, and a finale whose light, flowing character shows Beethoven writing with unusual ease. Though the nickname came from later listeners, the sonata’s warmth and openness have long made it one of his most beloved chamber works.
