About Marin Shakespeare Company
Marin Shakespeare Company
We are Marin Shakespeare Company

We have produced award-winning theatre at the Forest Meadows Amphitheatre since 1990. Now we are offering Theatre, Solo Shows, Play Readings, and special events in our downtown indoor theatre at 514 Fourth Street, San Rafael.

But we’re much more than just a theatre company.

We’re Playing for Good. What does it mean to play for good? We play for good by engaging hearts and minds in ways that heal both our selves and the world. On our stages, in classrooms, and in prisons, we create spaces for connection—where people come together to reflect on the past, envision the future, and ignite meaningful dialogue through the arts. We spark cultural engagement, inspire learning, and drive lasting community transformation.

On stage, we tell stories that make us think and feel deeply. We engage with Shakespeare’s texts to find new contemporary perspectives and resonances, while learning from the wisdom, failings, and poetic genius of these timeless texts.

Education programs for youth promote creativity, teamwork, and socio-emotional skills, opportunities that our students need more than ever after living through the isolation of the pandemic. Programs including Play Power, Will Power, the Teen Touring Company, and Shakespeare for Student Audiences reach about 5,000 students in over 30 schools each year.

Social Justice programs in prisons and Marin Juvenile Hall provide opportunities for people who are incarcerated to engage in self-reflection, emotional intelligence building, teamwork, creative problem-solving, and appreciating ourselves and others. Programs include Shakespeare, Autobiographical Story-telling, Acting for Veterans, Drama for Re-Entry, and Anger Management. Studies have shown that our program has positive mental health outcomes and reduces disciplinary write-ups. A recent study showed that programs like ours cut the recidivism rate more than in half. From our work in prisons, grew the Returned Citizens Theatre Troupe which gives people who have survived incarceration opportunities to tell stories of importance through theatre, building compassion and understanding. Social Justice is a value that informs all we do.

We believe that theatre has the power to transform, inform, and heal.
