Program Overview

By JoAnn Falletta, Music Director

Our program tonight is dedicated to the beautiful Earth, our home. Debussy paints a masterpiece—Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun—inspired by a poem about a little man-goat creature playing his pan pipes while he dreams of beautiful nymphs in the dappled forest. Buffalo native composer Robert Paterson's evocative Triple Concerto, "Summit," showcases our orchestra's soloists, but is also a moving portrait of our Earth and a prayer for us to care for our environment. We end with perhaps the greatest depiction of love of nature, Beethoven's personal "day in the country." His joy at arriving in the country, the sound of the brook and birds, a summer storm, and the happiness of the return of tranquility are all lovingly portrayed in Beethoven's cherished "Pastoral" symphony.
