Program Overview

By JoAnn Falletta, Music Director

This is a kaleidoscope of a concert—three great favorites, each completely different from the other! We begin with Brahms’ gift to the University of Breslau, his thanks for their bestowing upon him an honorary doctorate. Brahms had never gone to university, but he did know quite a number of ribald college drinking songs. He decided to include them in his Academic Festival Overture, to the absolute horror of the professors and the giddy delight of the graduating class! Concierto en Tango was written by Miguel del Aguila for our outstanding principal cellist Roman Mekinulov, recorded by the BPO, and nominated for a Latin GRAMMY. It has become a mega-hit! We end with one of the greatest works of the twentieth century: Dmitri Shostakovich's powerful fifth symphony, a thrilling and searing portrait of life in the reign of Joseph Stalin.

This will be a concert you will not forget!
