The three B’s of music! Well, we actually only have one of the traditional B’s, and two relatively new additions. Johannes Brahms’ work is the greatest first symphony ever written, partly because he waited until he was in his 40s to dare to write a symphony after the immortal Beethoven. His work epitomizes the deep nobility of the German tradition, and is a beautiful blend of Romanticism and Classicism in Brahms’ extraordinary voice.
The first half of the concert is a tribute to the British tradition. George Butterworth was the great young hope for the future of English music, when he was tragically killed in the Battle of the Somme in World War I. The German composer Max Bruch had a lifelong love of all things Scottish, as you will hear in his moving Fantasy, brilliantly played by Simone Porter.
