Program Overview

By JoAnn Falletta, Music Director

We are starting America’s 250th birthday a little bit early, with a program of beloved American favorites. From the jazzy accents of Bernstein's On the Town (set in New York City in the 1940s), to the breathtaking beauty of Copland’s sylvan Appalachian landscape, to George Gershwin's iconic jazz masterpiece Rhapsody in Blue performed by dynamic Canadian pianist, Jon Kimura Parker, we celebrate the extraordinary musical gifts American composers have shared with the world. We have two birthday presents from contemporary American composers, orchestrated especially for this concert: Michael Daugherty’s Niagara Falls, and Buffalo composer Paul Moravec’s Serenade. Enjoy our season finale—a celebration of musical fireworks!
