A concert I have been very much looking forward to - our beloved Associate Concertmaster comes to the front of the stage, to play one of the most beautiful violin concertos ever written. The Bruch is a perfect concerto, filled with warmth, depth, a pristine structure, and unforgettable melodies - perfect for Amy!
It will be a lovely companion to the Brahms Symphony that ends the concert. Brahms worked for a long time on his first symphony, but afterwards his second flowed effortlessly, filled with bucolic charm. Brahms told Clara Schumann that "there are so many melodies here that I have to be careful not to step on them."
To open the concert, we have a wonderful present, a world premiere of a piece written for the BPO. Jonathan Leshnoff, a leader in American contemporary music, has written a powerful and lyrical symphony for our orchestra, and we are honored to perform that work this weekend. Thank you, Jonathan, from all of us, for your stunning gift of music.
